The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Extended Edition, which recently came out on Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray, and DVD, comes with about 9 hours of bonus features, including additional footage inserted into the film. This release contains more behind-the-scenes looks, interviews, and so many tidbits about the film, its predecessor – The Lord Of The Rings – and the Tolkien universe, that you won’t know what to do with all this information. It’s truly awesome and delightful to watch.

— Martin Freeman was cast as Bilbo Baggins when Guillermo Del Toro was still signed on as director. But because the start of the film was delayed, Del Toro had to back out, and eventually so did Freeman, who had to head back to England as he was obligated to three months of filming on TV’s Sherlock. After the filmmakers found it difficult to cast another actor as Bilbo, they got Freeman to come back by doing other work and shooting the non-Bilbo scenes during those three months.
