It came as a huge surprise to every Spider-Man fan when it was announced that there would be two moreAmazing Spider-Man films to come out after the upcoming sequel. It became apparent that Sony was trying to establish a world that Marc Webb had created, and thus began the Sinister Six speculation. It made a lot of sense considering that two more films would be more than enough to set up that world and build up to one of the greatest threats that the webslinger has faced in his hero tenure.
But being signed on for The Amazing Spider-Man 4 film is all news to Andrew Garfield, who claims “I’m under contract for another one after this. As far as a fourth one”¦ that’s not anything to do with me.” Which is strange, because news of there being two more Spider-Man films being released in the future – the third is due out in 2016, with the fourth due out two years after – has been out for a while.
Garfield talked about his contract to Yahoo! Movies UK, who had asked about what we could see in the fourth film. As aforementioned, he says he is only under contract for another one after this (The Amazing Spider-Man 2).
So what do we have in store for ourselves in the fourth Amazing Spider-Man? Well as we have previously reported, the fourth film would reportedly be about more than just Spider-Man himself. Apparently it will turn its attention on his supporting characters – which could mean we could see heroes/antiheroes like Black Cat and Venom, or maybe its villains.
That being said, Sony will keep clinging on to the Spider-Man name for as long as it can, which means it will milk out every Spider-Man story out there. This could also mean that the studio will be renegotiating its contract with Garfield. And let’s not forget that there are spinoff films based on Spider-Man’s supporting characters in the works.
The actor also acknowledged some of the initial flaws the first film may have had:
“I think there was something that we were missing in the first one because our focus wasn’t on character so much. It was on trying to keep a number of plates spinning in the air.” In contrast, with The Amazing Spider-Man 2, “We’ve established the world and now we get to play inside that world and use our imagination and kind of expand.”
The Amazing Spider-man 2 opens in theaters on May 2, 2014.
