Briefly: When a film grosses $183 million at the box office on a $26 million budget, you would think that a studio might want to follow it up with a sequel. But that hasn’t happened for Paul Blart: Mall Cop for a few years. Until now. That’s right we are getting Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2. Kevin James will return to reprise his role as the titular bumbling mall security guard, as well as pen the script. Steve Carr, the director of the first one, will not be back, but it didn’t take too long for a director to be named after the sequel was announced.
THR reports that Parental Guidance director Andy Fickman will helm the film with Todd Garner acting as producer. James will also produce.
According to the trade, filmming is expected to begin in April for either a late 2014 release or a 2015 release. Hopefully it’s not the latter, because as we have seen before, a film like Grown Ups 2 can actually the be the harbinger of death to films like Pacific Rim.

Can be all cynical and say “What the he’ll…” But honestly, the first wasn’t an Oscar film, but it didn’t try to be. Just simple, fun entertainment. My son loved the first one and was excited to hear a sequel is on its way. We’ll be watching.
