Another day another story about a remake. News of these remakes are not entirely unexpected as the well of original stories has practically run dry. Most would agree that today’s remakes are poor if not nauseating reflections of the original.
So just imagine how An American Werewolf in London fans are feeling when they heard that Max Landis will write and direct the remake. More on the story below.
THR says The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman and David Albert will produce the remake for Universal Pictures. Todd Garner and Matt Smith will also produce.
Landis will be following in the footsteps of his father, John Landis, who directed the original An American Werewolf in London. The horror-comedy centered on two friends who are backpacking along the English countryside, when they are suddenly attacked by an unknown creature. While one managed to survive, he begins to see disturbing apparitions of his deceased friend, who informs him that he is a werewolf and will transform at the next full moon.
While it seems fitting that this will be Landis’s next project, it does come with some concerns. Landis is perhaps one of the most polarizing figures in the film industry. A lot of that has to do with the fact that there is some nepotism. Another fact is that he can continually get jobs despite producing scripts for box office flops like Victor Frankenstein and American Ultra – which was not as terrible as some would like to think. However, he is probably most recognized for his work on Chronicle, and is currently executing producer and writer Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, the BBC America television series he created based on the Douglas Adams books.
But An American Werewolf in London is much more than a beloved horror-comedy. The film actually help set the stage for the Academy to recognize the work of makeup artists that helped make the characters and transformations more visceral.
It’s not clear if this remake will have Max’s signature in order to distinguish itself from his father’s American Werewolf. The film was just announced, so a lot could happen between now and the release of the film. But hopefully, Landis is kind enough to keep us updated on the status of production as he is known to frequent social media. We’ll keep you posted on the developments of the film as they come in.
