Rumors of the tentatively titled The Batman having “serious script issues” were a cause for concern as it put a direct light on what many were fearing. That WB execs didn’t care about the quality of the script and were just happy that the film can make bank overseas. However, Bret Easton Ellis, who was the source of that rumor, backtracked on his comments and clarified that he was merely reporting on a second-hand rumor.
Moving on to much better news, Joe Manganiello, who will play Deathstroke, is talking a little bit about The Batman, its tone, and working with Ben Affleck. Check out what he had to say below.
Manganiello stopped by to talk to Mark Madden’s podcast (via ComicBookMovie.com) about the movie. While the issues with the script are no longer of any concern, the actor said The Batman is in very safe hands and quickly pointed out Affleck’s work ethic to ease any fears we may have about the upcoming film:
“Ben’s a great director, man. I mean the last movie that man directed won best picture. He’s got an Oscar for writing. Like, this is all the components to go down as a”¦ everything is lined up for a really, really, really great movie. Not only a superhero movie but just a great, great movie.”
Of course, Manganiello wouldn’t leave the podcast without giving us a small bit of hype. Here’s what the actor had to say about the film and its tone:
“When I met Ben we sat down and we talked about, you know, the role. We talked about the movie. His take is a fresh take but I think the audience is going to be surprised. Because it’s a road that no one’s really gone down that’s completely integral to, you know, who Batman is. And I think it’s gonna be refreshing but at the same time completely familiar. But it’s going to take this franchise in a direction that I think a lot of people are going to be really happy about. It’s going to be gritty and action packed and cerebral and all of those elements that people love about Batman.”
This goes back to the reports that the film will borrow from the comics while still being an original film. We still don’t know a whole lot about what The Batman is about. There have been rumors that the film could feature a number of villains from Batman’s rogue gallery and that it could be set in Arkham Asylum, but who knows that any of that is true. It would be exciting to see Batman go through a virtual gauntlet of villains he’s put away while also trying to deal with one of DC’s greatest assassins.
The Batman (if it is even called that) will reportedly begin production next year for either an October 5, 2018 or November 1, 2019 release.
