Rumor: Pixar’s Newest Project Is ‘Star Wars’ Related

Star Wars Pixar Mashup Header

When Disney bought the rights to Star Wars, the studio also had names like Marvel and Pixar under their belt. Back when the studio bought Marvel, one of the ideas that came into fruition was a Marvel and Disney collaboration, which would become the upcoming Big Hero 6. So now you add Star Wars into the mix, and you have even more properties to work with than just animation. Star Wars is already making its way into the comic book world releasing a comics under the Marvel name. But what about animation?

It seems a bit too obvious for Disney to get Star Wars into the animation pool. After all, the highly successful Star Wars: Clone Wars animated series had a lengthy run before Disney purchased the name. But now the studio may be thinking bigger than just an animated series like the forthcoming Star Wars: Rebels; they may actually make an animated movie under the Pixar banner. Hit the jump to see if the rumors are true.

LatinoReview first broke the news of Pixar working on a Star Wars animated movie, but details on it are obviously scarce. It could be that the animated feature may be one of the spinoff films that was announced when Disney first bought LucasFilm, or it could be something else entirely.

As far as releases go, Pixar has The Good Dinosaur, Inside Out, Finding Dory, and the Untitled Dia De Los Muertos Project coming to theaters between 2015 and 2017. So we are still quite a way away from actually seeing the project since Pixar already has their hands full on the four aforementioned projects, with the earliest possible release being 2018.

Though Pixar likes to pride itself on original stories, a Star Wars film would be their first adaptation of a property. So if they were to continue that tradition of original story telling, it could be that the speculated Star Wars Pixar film would feature new characters. Again, this is all just speculation.

So what are your thoughts? Should Pixar make a Star Wars film?

  1. Why not? They have a good track record and care careful with story. Though maybe they should let Disney Animation do it as the past few years they’ve been better than Pixar (Wreck-It Ralph should’ve won Oscar last year, not Brave).
