Edgar Wright will be making his full-fledged entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe when Ant-Man begins filming later this year for release two summers from now. The universally-adored Hot Fuzz filmmaker recently announced that he will be bringing a pair of old friends to serve in important roles behind the scenes.
First up, Bill Pope will be Ant-Man‘s director of photography, and his name should be familiar to lovers of fantastic cinema the world over. Pope’s past credits as cinematographer include Army of Darkness, The Matrix and its two sequels, and both Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3. He also served as DP on Wright’s last two films, Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World and The World’s End. Pope is one of the best cinematographers of dynamic action working in the film industry and his experience with capturing large-scale superheroics with vibrant style and color makes him a natural fit for Edgar Wright’s latest splashy extravaganza.
Wright announced Pope’s addition to the Ant-Man production team by posting this picture on his blog Edgar Wright Here:
On Sunday, following Steven Price‘s win at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards for composing the music score for Gravity, Wright announced on his Twitter that Price would be creating the original music for Ant-Man:
Price has previously worked with Wright composing additional music for Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World and the entire score for The World’s End. He also composed the score for the 2011 sci-fi horror comedy Attack the Block, which was produced by Wright and both written and directed by Ant-Man co-writer Joe Cornish. Prior to becoming a composer, Price worked as a music editor on beloved blockbusters like Batman Begins and the second and third films in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I loved Price’s John Carpenter-influenced scores for The World’s End and Attack the Block, so it’s a real pleasure to see him bringing his considerable experience to the Ant-Man soundtrack.
I love it when great directors continue to work with creative collaborators who truly understand them and their vision for a particular film. This typically ensures that a production will go smoothly and the final film will be terrific entertainment. Judging by how things have been progressing in the pre-production phase of Ant-Man, there’s a very good chance that Wright’s latest will be just as memorable and thrilling as his previous films.
Wright has so far cast Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas as the new and old Ant-Men, with Michael Pena and Evangeline Lilly rumored to be signing on for key roles as well. Ant-Man will hit theaters on July 17, 2015.
