Back in December the Movie God reported that Anna Paquin‘s brief appearance as Rogue in next month’s mutant-packed mega-sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past had become an occupant of the cutting room floor. According to director Bryan Singer at the time it was an “embarrassment of riches” situation and while it was a “really good sequence” it simply had to go.
Singer’s comments seemed to signal the end of the matter, until Paquin’s name appeared in the credits at the end of the new trailer for Days of Future Past that was released on Tuesday evening. I watched that trailer twice and couldn’t spot the presence of Rogue at any time unless it was a “blink and you’ll miss it” moment. According to a representative at 20th Century Fox Paquin’s role has now been recovered from the unforgiving territory of future Blu-ray supplements and reinstated to the cut of Future Past that will be released theatrically, but in a slightly reduced form.
As related to BuzzFeed:
“Essentially, [it’s] a cameo,” the rep said.
There you have it. Paquin won’t have much of a part in the highly anticipated superhero blockbuster, but at least she’ll be in the film somewhere. I always felt that Rogue, much like Cyclops and many other X-Men, were sidelined in previous entries in the franchise and given precious little to do onscreen. She might just show up to get killed in Future Past and the full version of her performance will be made available on the inevitable special edition Blu-ray hitting stores just in time for the holidays. Maybe a small victory is better than none at all.
Paquin rejoins her cast-mates Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Halle Berry, Nicholas Hoult, Ellen Page, Peter Dinklage, Shawn Ashmore, Omar Sy, Evan Peters, and Daniel Cudmore for the biggest X-venture of them all.
X-Men: Days of Future Past opens in the U.S. on May 23, 2014 and around most of the world the day before.
