On August 5th, 2014, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods, the first feature film in 17 years from Akiria Toriyama and the Dragon Ball franchise, will be released in theaters nationwide. The 18th movie in the series, Battle of the Gods was originally released in Japan in March of 2013. Now, Funimation has dubbed the film in English and those of us in the United States who have been eagerly anticipating this movie will finally have the chance to view it.
Set 5 years after the Majin Buu Saga and a few years before Dragon Ball GT, Battle of the Gods includes all of the series’ fan favorite characters. Below is the anime’s official synopsis followed by the new theatrical trailer.
Stunning animation and epic new villains highlight the first new Dragon Ball Z feature film in seventeen years! Beerus, the God of Destruction, travels to Earth in search of a good fight. Only Goku, humanity’s greatest hero, can ascend to the level of a Super Saiyan God and stop Beerus’s rampage!
17 years ago, I was in 5th grade. That was actually the year I first fell in love with Dragon Ball Z, though not through the 10th anniversary film — unfortunately, the last one we’d see for a very long time. I remember watching my first episode on a Sunday morning — a random episode of the Saiyan Saga on, what was at the time, the WB. The character of Tien was battling the Saiyan, Nappa; or should I say, powering up for 20 minutes, looking furious and exhausted, and having a heated conversation with Nappa. I was sure for the next few episodes that Tien was the main character of the show; oh, how I was mistaken!
Dragon Ball Z was the beginning of my anime obsession for years to come. I don’t watch anime like I used to, but I cannot wait for Battle of the Gods! Who’s with me?
