Guillermo del Toro Pacific Rim

Fans of Pacific Rim were elated by the recent announcement that Pacific Rim 2 is officially on the way. But before director Guillermo del Toro jumps into the massive sequel, it appears he’ll be taking on a small project first.

According to del Toro, who’s currently in post-production on his upcoming horror flick Crimson Peak, he’ll next begin working on a much smaller black and white movie before eventually getting to work on Pacific Rim 2.

Continue reading for more info, including who might star.

Speaking to Collider, del Toro said:

“Right away, in February/March I should [start on] another very small movie, black and white, really, really bizarre before starting””we start pre-production on Pacific Rim 2 in August, and then I interrupt it briefly to go into the first of next year to do this strange little movie, and then I restart it and go all the way until we start shooting Pacific Rim 2 at the end of 2015 for release in 2017.”

And as for the possible cast, the director said:

“It’s a very small cast. I would love to have John Hurt, and there’s an actress that I have in mind that is not well-known but I’ve seen her in a short film. That’s all she’s really done, one feature and one short, but she has an incredibly interesting taste and I’m gonna try her out for the main role.”

What kind of movie this will be exactly is not yet known. The only thing del Toro has revealed is that it has “one great creature” and that it does have a title, though he doesn’t want to reveal what it’s called just yet, preferring to wait and show people.

One movie fans of del Toro have been wanting to see for a long time is a third in his unofficial Spanish Civil War trilogy, which began with The Devil’s Backbone and was followed by Pan’s Labyrinth—considered by many to be the director’s two best works. Unfortunately, though hard to say for sure, it’s very likely that this is not that movie.

No matter what it is, any project from del Toro is an exciting one, and the fact that this sounds like a low-budget passion project makes it all the more exciting to learn or see more.
