Never one to allow depressing developments to deter him from doing that which he loves, filmmaker Edgar Wright has walked away from the collapse of his version of Ant-Man at Marvel Studios a bit older and wiser than before, and is heading full blast into his next film project to be titled Baby Driver.
Wright, who also wrote the screenplay, will be making his first original feature since completing the “Three Flavors Cornetto” trilogy last year with The World’s End. Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. had Baby Driver described to him as “a collision of crime, action, music and sound.” A pretty vague description but one that seems perfectly within Wright’s creative wheelhouse. The project is set up at the director’s longtime home Working Title Films and will be produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, and Nira Park, Wright’s producers on Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End.
Working Title currently has a U.S. distribution deal with Universal Pictures so that could be the studio that ends up releasing Baby Driver stateside. Either that or Universal’s art-house label Focus Features will do the honors as they did with The World’s End. Shaun and Fuzz were both released in the U.S. by Rogue Pictures, which was once set up at Universal and is now a subsidiary of Relativity Media.
There’s no word yet on any of Wright’s previous creative collaborators such as Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Joe Cornish being involved with Baby Driver. His usual partners-in-crime all have their own multitude of projects in various stages of development so they might be too busy to join in on Edgar’s latest, at least in a behind-the-scenes capacity. Pegg and/or Frost could always show up in the cast.
Working Title is reportedly fast-tracking Baby Driver and with the Marvel Cinematic Universe no longer occupying his precious time Wright can now devote all of his energies to bringing his fans another dose of his own special brand of imaginative big screen excitement. It already has my money.
