Dan Aykroyd Believes ‘Ghostbusters’ Franchise Could Mirror Marvel Cinematic Universe

ghostbusters

For whatever strange reason, Ghostbusters 3 news just won’t stay dead. It feels like we’ve been reporting on every single thing related to the long-gestating sequel, and nothing has come to fruition. The sequel is actually more in limbo than it is gestating considering a script hasn’t been written yet, but it is one film that refuses to die. Part of that is thanks to Dan Aykroyd, who is doing all he can to keep Ghostbusters 3 news alive.

Now a new rumor, which comes from Aykroyd himself, yet again, says that Ghostbusters could go far beyond just a trilogy. It could have a universe in the vein of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Hollywood Reporter caught up with the actor, who was promoting his line of Crystal Head Vodka in the UK. He says he’s talked to producer Ivan Reitman about expanding the Ghostbusters film beyond a trilogy.

“It’s beyond just another sequel, a prequel, another TV show. I’m thinking what does the whole brand mean to Sony?” he said. “What does Pixar and Star Wars mean to Disney? What does Marvel mean to Fox?”

While Ghostbusters will always have a place in my heart, I can’t say that I’d be on board with the idea that it could sustain a franchise universe. The initials films weren’t written that way, and it’s even more of a reason for star Bill Murray to walk far away from it. Is there a need to have a connective thread for a film about the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man? What made Ghostbusters special is that they were everyday people, who didn’t have super powers or arc-reactors in their hearts. These guys were one of us, it just so happens they tracked and captured supernatural beings with proton packs.

As to the status of Ghostbusters 3, Aykroyd had this to say:

Aykroyd also added that he thought the idea of a female-led Ghostbusters was a possibility for the third or fourth film. “We need to write it,” he said though.

Yup, Ghostbusters 3 hasn’t even been written yet.

What do you think about a possible Ghostbusters Franchise Universe?
