Doctor Strange has been gestating for quite some time now. The film didn’t even get to have a Comic-Con panel shortly after it was announced that Scott Derrickson would be directing the film from a script most recently written by Jon Spaihts.
Since then, we’ve been getting a few casting rumors as to who would be playing the titular character. Joaquin Phoenix‘s name has been recently attached to the role. Edgar Ramirez and Benedict Cumberbatch have also been on the rumored shortlist. Now, a new report states that filming is scheduled to begin mid-2015 for a Summer 2016 release.
Screendaily says that Doctor Strange is scheduled for a July 8, 2016 release. It just so happens that this is one of the Marvel Mystery Movie dates that Marvel had already locked down in the past.
The remaining mystery movie dates are:
May 5, 2017November 3, 2017May 4, 2018July 6, 2018November 2, 2018May 3, 2019Marvel has yet to officially announce that Doctor Strange will be taking the July 8, 2016 slot, but seeing as they already have a director and screenwriter in place, and a possible actor for the lead role, this release date makes perfect sense. Production teams are already being assembled for the shoot as well.
Filming will take place over at Pinewood Studios in the UK. Other Disney-related films shot at that location include Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Star Wars: Episode VII, and Alice In Wonderland: Through The Looking Glass.
Ant-Man is currently shooting in Pinewood Studios’ Atlanta location.
Dr. Stephen Strange is a surgeon who gains mystical powers and becomes the sorcerer supreme following a horrific accident. Interestingly enough, there is a rumor that says the film wouldn’t be an origin story, which could explain why Jasper Sitwell mentioned his name in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
