Variety is reporting that The Jim Henson Company has brought in the great Billy Crystal to write, produce, and star in an upcoming animated feature of theirs titled Which Witch. But it’s another teeny tiny bit of information that really stands out.
At the very bottom of the report, mentioned as a side note, is a list of projects currently being developed related to existing Henson properties. They include the Fraggle Rock movie we’ve heard about in the past, a sequel to The Dark Crystal that pops up in the news every now and again, a new movie based on the Emmet Otter character, and a sequel to the 1986 fantasy tale Labyrinth. Wait, what? A Labyrinth sequel?!
This is something you’d think would have been more noticeably announced, but I had no luck whatsoever in finding any trace of its existence on the ol’ world wide web. Either way, it’s news to me and surely many of you. Apart from this briefest of mentions by Variety nothing else is known, so there’s no word on what the story will be or if any stars of the original will be back.
Hoggle (Hogwart?), Ludo, and lots of other puppets (no CGI!) are all we really need, but if David Bowie reprises his role as the Goblin King, Jareth, he’ll likely need a new wardrobe to avoid their PG rating getting bumped up to a PG-13.
As for Which Witch, the movie will be based on the 1979 Eva Ibbotson book, in which a wizard holds a competition between seven witches in order to determine which of the witches he wishes to wed.
The movie is part of the Jim Henson Company’s expansion of their film slate. Their live-action feature Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day will be released in theaters this Friday.

Variety will burn if this isn’t true! The world needs these movies.
