Last week we spotted a curious little bit of information in an article by Variety that seemed to indicate that, along with the new Fraggle Rock and Dark Crystal movies we’ve heard about, The Jim Henson Company was also working on a sequel to their 1986 fan-favorite Labyrinth…something no one else had ever heard about.
It seemed odd that not another peep about this sequel was to be found anywhere on the internet, but seeing as how it was Variety, we ran with it while also warning that it could turn out to be a misunderstanding. And as it turns out, sadly, this might be the case after all. According to Entertainment Weekly, sources have told them that a sequel is not being developed at the moment. The Henson Co. had no comment.
While this is indeed depressing news if true, it’s also part of the Hollywood dance. It’s hard to ever really know what’s going on behind the curtain, and often we hear something denied when it is in fact true.
According to the EW denial, Labyrinth is one of the Henson Company’s legacy titles that often gets brought up at meetings but nothing ever comes of it. So, as it stands, this could be a big misunderstanding and the sequel never existed, or it could be that the sequel wasn’t supposed to be public knowledge yet and it’s being denied to cover up the tracks until down the road a bit.
One thing is for sure, though. If a sequel to Labyrinth really doesn’t exist in any way at the moment, The Henson Company is going to have to give it a strong look at their next meeting given the overwhelming response the very idea has received.
Personally, I’d be much more interested in seeing another puppet-filled movie set in the world of Labyrinth than the other Henson titles. How about you?
