At the Star Wars Rebels panel at New York Comic-Con on Saturday, fans were surprised and delighted when they got to preview Episode 1.5 “Rise of the Old Masters” set to air October 27, 2014 on Disney XD. The series takes place five years before Star Wars: A New Hope. Vanessa Marshall, who voices Hera Syndulla, a Twi’lek pilot rebel, spoke about what it’s like to play Hera, being a Star Wars fan, and answered some burning questions.
Marshall said that Hera is very much a leader and that she doesn’t say much. But as Lao Tzu says in the Dao de Jing, “He who talks doesn’t know and he who knows doesn’t talk.” Hera is a quiet leader. There is power in silence. She is the protector and the glue. She goes on to say about any flaw, “Maybe she needs to lighten up a little bit.”
Of fans and NYCC? “I’ve made so many lifelong friends,” she said. “I’m so lucky, it’s unreal. I hung out with fans. If you are wearing a Star Wars shirt, I will speak to you.”
Some of the burning questions?
Q-What character, real or fiction, do you relate to most?
A-Princess Leia or Han Solo. There’s an elegance to Princess Leia. But she has skills – she can pilot a ship.
Q-What was your favorite of the six movies?
A-Return of the Jedi. Not the ending. It gives a deep understanding of Anakin. Darth Vader saves his son’s life. It’s a satisfactory compelling end to the narrative arc.
Q-Favorite scene of the six movies?
A-Greedo and Han. I know it’s fraught with controversy [audience starts shouting Greedo! Han!]
A-I love Princess Leia, but my first action figure was Chewie, so I’m partial to Wookies.
Episode 1.5 “Rise of the Old Masters” opens with Kanan (Freddie Prinze Jr.) training Ezra (Taylor Grey) in the art of the Jedi. Kanan isn’t sure he has what it takes to train Ezra, when they get wind of a previously thought-dead Jedi needing rescue. Tune in October 27th on Disney XD at 9pm to find out what happens!
