One of the most surprisingly hilarious films of 2012 was Pitch Perfect. The film had a sweet blend of witty humor and top 40 pop songs mashups that even had some haters tapping their foot to the beat of the music. Now Anna Kendick and Rebel Wilson are back for some more in Pitch Perfect 2. The first film saw the Barden Bellas beat the odds to become the first female a capella group to win a national title. In the sequel, the Bellas will enter themselves in a world wide competition where no American team has won.
The first trailer for Pitch Perfect 2 has comedy, cameos, the return of familiar faces, and of course music. But there are some emotional layers that can be heard as well, as hinted by the very first song sung in the trailer. Hit the jump to check it out.
Making her directorial debut is Elizabeth Banks. She was actually a producer in the first film, so she’s pretty familiar with the material. Kay Cannon (New Girl, 30 Rock) also returns as the film’s screenplay writer.
From what we saw in Pitch Perfect, Anna Camp, Brittany Snow, and Adam DeVine either graduated or left the group. So seeing them return in full a capella attire doesn’t quite add up, but I’m sure it will all be explained.
Pitch Perfect 2 also sees the addition of Hailee Steinfeld, who appears to be a part of the Barden Bellas. Katey Sagal is also in the film, but doesn’t appear in the trailer.
Pitch Perfect was actually one of my favorite films of 2012, so hearing that there will be a sequel got me excited and also worried. But the new trailer pretty much eased all those worries as everything we remembered and loved about the first one is still there.
Universal plans to release Pitch Perfect 2 on May 15, 2015.
