SDCC 2013: Divergent panel: Ansel Elgort

After his highly public departure from Marvel’s Ant-Man, Edgar Wright is moving on to other things, including an original piece called Baby Driver. Written and directed by the Shaun Of The Dead filmmaker, the new film, which has been picked up for distribution by Sony for TriStar, will combine everything we love about Wright’s style: action, comedy, music, and more.

The search is on now as to who will take the lead role of a “talented, young getaway driver” in Baby Driver, a flick that’s being described as “the ultimate rock-and-roll car chase film.”

Hit the jump for more.

The Fault In Our StarsAnsel Elgort tops the shortlist of actors for the lead role, according to Variety, which reports that he’s in early talks after Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson, Fury) and John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) previously chased the part. Boyega made his breakout performance in 2011 in the Joe Cornish-directed sci-fi monster film Attack the Block, which was executive produced by Wright.

The 20-year-old Elgort, who played Tommy Ross in the 2013 Carrie remake, has been involved in several YA-geared films, with a high-profile role in the 2014 hit film adaptation of The Fault in Our Stars, where he played Shailene Woodley’s terminally ill character’s love interest. Elgort teamed up again in 2014 with Woodley for Divergent, where he played Caleb Prior, a role he’ll be reprising in this year’s sequel, The Divergent Series: Insurgent.

There is no official plot synopsis out yet for Baby Driver, but the Hollywood trade says that the story follows a talented, young getaway driver who relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss, he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom.

After a very public split from Marvel, it’s great to see Wright moving forward with projects that he is passionate about, and will no longer have to tailor his scripts to massive franchises and sequels.

So what do you think about Wright’s new project? Is Elgort the right person for the job based on the plot given?
