Shorty after Marvel Studios announced their film slate until 2019, Inglourious Basterds star Daniel Bruhl joined the cast of Captain America: Civil War. At the time the role was unknown, but given that it was a Captain America film, the chances of it being Baron Zemo were pretty high. Then came the rumors that Bruhl would be playing Baron Mordo, a Dr. Strange villain. If true, how that connection would work wasn’t exactly clear, but we all know Marvel has these things planned out well in advanced.
But a leaked casting call confirms that Bruhl will be in fact playing as Zemo. Hit the jump for more.
Comic Book Movie discovered the news on Movie Casting Call. The site confirms that Frank Grillo will reprise his role as Brock Rumlow aka Crossbones.
Zemo is the Mad Scientist known for wearing a mask that has been permanently glued to his face, which in turn made him crazy. There are actually many iterations of the character, and the casting call doesn’t make it clear if this Zemo is the same one from World War II or some sort of offspring.
The casting call also doesn’t reveal why they fight or why Iron Man and Captain America fight – the latter could be revealed during the events of Avengers: Age Of Ultron.
Captain America: Civil War, which opens in theaters on May 6, 2016, stars Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/The Falcon, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier, and possibly Jeremy Renner returning as Hawkeye. Chadwick Boseman makes his Marvel Cinematic Debut as Black Panther.
