Fantastic Four

[Update 1/27/2014: The trailer has been released – watch it HERE.]

The teaser trailer for The Fantastic Four, Fox’s reboot of the Marvel property, will reportedly be attached to UK screenings of comic book movie Kingsman: The Secret Service starting this weekend, and hopefully officially online soon after.

Simon Kinberg, one of the film’s screenwriters, had said last year that the upcoming Josh Trank-directed film would be “a more realistic” and “a more gritty, grounded telling” of the FF story, as opposed to Fox’s first time around with the Marvel superhero team in Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007).

Now comes reports that the teaser will reveal a “fast and gritty” flick that greatly differs from its predecessors.

Below is the scoop from Twitter user G@BRIELGR@Y (via Comic Book Movie, who describes him as “a Twitter user notorious for leaking movie material”):

Kata Mara, who stars as Susan Storm/Invisible Woman, said last year that the film’s plot will not be based on any previously published Fantastic Four stories, which means it won’t follow the comic books. Here’s the official synopsis for the film; note the use of “contemporary re-imagining” – that’s code for “we did whatever the hell we wanted to this story you all know and love.”

“The Fantastic Four,” a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

The Fantastic Four, which hits 3D theaters in North America on August 7, 2015, stars Miles Teller (Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic), Kate Mara (Susan Storm/Invisible Woman), Michael B. Jordan (Johnny Storm/Human Torch), and Jamie Bell (Ben Grimm/The Thing) as the superhero team, with Tim Blake Nelson as Harvey Elder, Reg E. Cathey as Dr. Storm (Sue and Johnny’s father), and Toby Kebbell as the team’s nemesis Victor Domashev/Doom. Note – the villain is “Doom” not Doctor Doom and he’s also not Victor Von Doom, as in the comics. He’s been given a very different origin story and actor Toby Kebbell has said that his character is a “very anti-social programmer” that goes by the blogger handle “Doom.”

Having not seen one piece of footage yet or even a still from The Fantastic Four, it’s hard to tell the direction of this new movie, and it’s hard to picture, from what we already know, how this could be a “gritty” picture. With the official description and other notable deviations from the comic book (the user of “blogger” is cringeworthy), it almost seems like this could be a movie about any characters – not specially the Fantastic Four. Will this movie feel like a Marvel superhero story? That remains to be seen.

[UPDATE 1/26/2015 PM: The first behind-the-scenes photos have been released; see them here.]

For now, here’s the tiniest bit of anything that’s come out of this production – a photo that Kate Mara posted online on her final day of shooting, back in August 2014, of herself with the other FF team members NOT in costume:

Keep it here at Geeks Of Doom, we’ll bring you the teaser trailer as soon as it’s officially online.

  1. This movie looks pretty horrible. I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks so.
