In what should be the first of many new series to come out of Marvel Comics upcoming Secret Wars event, Marvel has revealed a new team of Avengers unlike any Avengers team that has come before. A-Force is the name of the new series, and it will be the first team of Avengers comprised entirely of heroines, with the likes of She-Hulk, Medusa, Dazzler, and more.
Written by G. Willow Wilson (Ms. Marvel) and Marguerite K. Bennett (Angela: Asgards Assassin), with art by Jorge Molina (X-Men), A-Force launches in May along with the rest of Secret Wars. There aren’t a lot of details about this title yet, on account of it being so closely tied into Secret Wars, so it’s hard to say what the series is actually about, beyond the all-female hook.
We can look at the first cover and speculate that the team will be made of different versions of many of Marvels’ most famous female characters from different points in the past. On the cover by Jim Cheung, we see She-Hulk in her 80’s costume; Rogue, Storm, and Jubilee in their 90’s costumes; and Dazzler in her original disco costume. We also have the new character Singularity (she’s the one made of stars), so who knows what exactly is going on. I suppose we’ll have to actually read the comic to find out.
“She-Hulk, Dazzler, Medusa, Nico Minoru and other fan favorites, will take charge,” says series co-writer G. Willow Wilson. “We’ve purposefully assembled a team composed of different characters from disparate parts of the Marvel U, with very different power sets, identities and ideologies.”
And there came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth’s mightiest heroines found themselves united against a common threat. On that day, A-Force was born””to fight the foes no single Super Hero could withstand! Their glory will never been denied! Heed the call, A-Force Assemble!
