Jennifer Lawrence is in very early talks to star in Passengers, a sci-fi adventure/love story, according to Variety, while The Wrap reports that Chris Pratt is in early talks for the lead male role.
Oscar-nominated director Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game), helms this Sony drama with Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Marvel’s Doctor Strange) penning the script.
Set in the future, Passengers sees thousands of people traveling to settle on a distant planet, when a man (Pratt’s role) wakens too early after 90 years, and wakes up a woman (Lawrence’s role), literally and figuratively, to avoid becoming lonely.
The project has been in development hell for quite some time, with the rights being held previously by Weinstein Company and Focus Features, with other actors being attached. Now that Passengers is at Sony, Lawrence is the third actress we’ve heard associated with the movie, after Reese Witherspoon and Rachel McAdams. Here’s hoping she is the last one considered for the lead. She proven her versatility as an actress with the blockbuster YA Hunger Games movies, where she stars as Katniss Everdeen in the role that skyrocketed her popularity, as well as Oscar-nominated films like Silver Linings Playbook (she won the Best Actress Oscar) and American Hustle (she got an Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actress).
Lawrence’s busy schedule reportedly might prevent her from signing onto the project. The actress returns to the X-Men film franchise as Mystique for Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse, which starts filming in April 2015 in Montreal, Canada for a May 27, 2016 theatrical release. She’s also reportedly in talks for Fox’s romantic drama The Dive, helmed by her Hunger Games: Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence and produced by James Cameron (Avatar). The Oscar-winner will next be seen in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, which wrapped last June (it was filmed at the same time as Part 1) and will hit theaters on November 20, 2015.
Meanwhile, Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt, who might take up the male lead spot that Keanu Reeves once considered, explores the Jurassic World on June 12, 2015 and will return in 2017 as Star-Lord for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy 2. The actor can currently be seen on NBC’s Parks and Recreation, which finishes its seventh and final season on February 24, 2015.
Pratt and Lawrence together in Passengers seems a delicious pairing for a pair of adventurous acting experts who are very easy on the eyes.
