The upcoming Deadpool movie has found its female lead. It’s being reported that Morena Baccarin has been cast, joining star Ryan Reynolds, who was confirmed to be returning in December.
Details on who Baccarin will play are scarce, but she’s described as the love interest of Deadpool, also known as Wade Wilson or the “Merc with a Mouth,” and someone who finds herself struggling with the fact that she’s falling for someone who has a terribly disfigured face.
The actress is best known for two roles mainly, one as the companion Inara Serra on Joss Whedon’s cult classic space western Firefly and the movie that followed it, Serenity, and also as Jessica Brody on the hit Showtime drama Homeland. Most recently she’s joined the cast of Fox’s Batman prequel Gotham as Dr. Leslie Thompkins, but that and this recent casting in Deadpool are not her first dance with comic book-related material. She also provides the voice of Gideon on the TV series The Flash, Talia al Ghul in the animated movie Son of Batman, Cheetah in an episode of the animated TV show Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and also Black Canary, Dinah Lance, and Edgar Mandragora in the 2005-2006 animated series Justice League.
Other things she has starred in include Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: The Ark of Truth as Adria, and V as Anna. She can be seen next in the upcoming Paul Feig comedy Spy alongside Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, Rose Byrne, and Jude Law, which will be released on May 22nd.
Baccarin joins a cast that also includes T.J. Miller, star of such titles as Silicon Valley, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Big Hero 6, and Cloverfield, in a currently unspecified role; The Transporter Legacy and Game of Thrones actor Ed Skrein; and also Haywire, Fast & Furious 6, In the Blood, and former MMA star Gina Carano as Angel Dust.
Colossus is expected to appear in Deadpool as well, but who will play that role has not yet been officially announced.
Tim Miller directs the movie, based on a script by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and the movie is currently scheduled to release in just under a year on February 12, 2016.
