The internet caught fire when District 9 and Elysium, and director Neill Blomkampshared some concept art for a movie set in Ridley Scott‘s 1979 classic Alien universe, leading many to think he was, or at one point had been, working on a new movie in the franchise.
More recently he confirmed that he’s always wanted to make an Alien movie, and when there was some down time during post production on his latest movie, Chappie, he began working on the concept art, inspired in part by one of his Chappie stars and original Alien bad-ass Sigourney Weaver. Even more surprising, he revealed that if he wanted to make the movie, he could.
Now it appears, believe it or not, that that’s exactly what Blomkamp is planning to do for his next project.
Blomkamp shared another piece of concept art, which you can see below, which appeared to confirm the movie was indeed a go.
Now The Wrap is reporting that this is in fact the case, and that Blomkamp has signed on to direct a brand new movie set in the Alien universe. The movie will not be the planned sequel to Ridley Scott’s 2012 prequel Prometheus, however, but instead it will take place after the events of that movie.
Prometheus 2 is currently scheduled for a release on March 4, 2016, and it is said that Scott will be a producer on both that and Blomkamp’s entry to the franchise.
Though Weaver was part of the inspiration for Blomkamp’s vision of the movie, and even featured in the concept along with co-star Michael Biehn, the actress’s involvement in this new movie is not yet confirmed.
Are you excited to see what Neill Blomkamp can do in the Alien universe? Where would you like to see the story go?
Not really. District 9 was okay, but I did not like Elysium. In my mind, he is better known for social commentary rather than directing talent, and I fear an Alien movie directed by him will be driven by social commentary rather than story.
