As Disney’s Big Hero 6 finishes its theatrical run on the heels of its China premiere last week, the big story now is that the animated film firmly takes its place among the biggest Disney animated films of all time. After it’s international run, Big Hero 6 is currently running at $604.8M ($221.3M domestic/$383.5M international) with a few weeks left to run in China. That places it just ahead of Tangled to bring it to third place behind the juggernaut of Frozen and the timeless The Lion King.

The Academy Award-winning film was recently released in the U.S. on Digital HD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack.

The movie about a boy and his robot is loosely based on a Marvel property of the same name. In the wake of a tragedy, young Hiro (Ryan Potter) recruits a robotic nurse named Baymax (Scott Adsit) along with his friends to fight against a masked bad guy in fictional San Fransokyo. The film recently won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature and was a hit with both critics and fans.

All this success at the box office adds to the seemingly unstoppable Disney juggernaut. Between Marvel movies (including this Spring’s Avengers: Age of Ultron) and a much-anticipated live-action adaptation of Cinderella, Disney looks to have a phenomenally successful year after ruling the box office in 2014. All this before rolling out Star Wars: The Force Awakens this December.

The other side of the success of Big Hero 6 also speaks to Disney taking risks and still finding big payoffs. Like Guardians of the Galaxy (which was 2014’s big box office darling), the film was often spoken of as a gamble as to whether or not audiences would go for it. The source material for Big Hero 6 was inspired by was a short run comic series featuring a team of Japanese heroes and was actually quite obscure even during its run in the late 90’s. It’s safe to say now though that the gamble paid off big time and we can probably expect to see more of young Hiro and the lovable Baymax in the future. Meanwhile, you can find Big Hero 6 on Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital in stores and online now.
