Is a sequel to the 1995 comedy favorite Mallrats now in our future? It’s not yet known for sure, but director Kevin Smith has teased the possibility of it happening eventually.
Smith took the Twitter to share what his current schedule of movies to make looks like—a mixture of comedies and the horror he’s been making more lately—including Clerks III, Hit Somebody, and Moose Jaws before finally dropping the tiny Mallrats 2 tease.
First up Smith shared that the long-awaited Clerks III, a new sequel to his 1994 breakout cult classic and its 2006 follow-up, will begin filming in just a couple of months in May.
After that comes his hockey dramedy Hit Somebody, which has been talked about for a long time now and has changed from one movie to two movies, then back to one movie, and then into a mini series. What it will actually be when it’s all said and done is not exactly known at the moment, but Smith plans to film it from September to Christmas time of this year. The movie tells the story of a hockey player who has an aptitude for dropping the gloves and fighting, and is based on the song “Hit Somebody! (The Hockey Song)” by Warren Zevon.
Next in the plans for Smith is Moose Jaws, which he says will film in just under a year in February of 2016. The movie is another somewhat bonkers horror movie and the third in Smith’s True North trilogy, which began with last year’s Tusk and will continue with Yoga Hosers when that movie is released later this year. He describes Moose Jaws, just as you might imagine it: “That’s just Jaws with a moose. And it’s awesome.”
Smith is also set to direct a segment in the holiday-themed anthology horror flick, fittingly titled Holidays.
As for the Mallrats 2 tease, here’s the tweet Smith sent out. It’s not much, but fans got the point immediately…unless he actually meant he’s directing a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie and everyone misunderstood.
