Felicity Jones was the first to be announced to have a role in Star Wars: Rogue One by Disney CEO Bob Iger a few weeks back. While we did learn what the title of the film was going to be and who would lead, details as to what the story could be about remain a secret. Many have speculated that it could have something to do with the Rebel Alliance’s elite X-Wing pilots, the Rogue Squadron. Before that there were rumors of it having to do with the Rebel Alliance hiring bounty hunters to steal plans to the Death Star.
Today we are no closer to finding out what the film will be about. However, we know that a new actor is in talks to have a role. Ben Mendelsohn (The Place Beyond The Pines, Netflix’s Bloodline) is reportedly circling an unknown role in the film. Hit the jump for more.
The plot of the film is unknown, and the report didn’t give us any details about the role. However, Mendelsohn has made a career of playing criminals and villains in films, so the fact that Disney is looking at him gives us an idea of what as to what it could be about. If he does indeed sign on, this could fall in line with earlier rumors that the film would be about the bounty hunters stealing the plans to the Death Star or he could play some Galactic Empire military officer if it is about the Rogue Squadron.
Mendelsohn is a tremendous actor, who along with The Place Beyond the Pines and the Netflix series Bloodline has also appeared in Killing Them Softly, The Dark Knight Rises, Exodus: Gods and Kings, and most recently in Slow West with Michael Fassbender and Kodi Smit-McPee and Mississippi Grind with Ryan Reynolds.
Gareth Edwards is directing Star Wars: Rogue One, using a script written by Chris Weitz based on a draft penned by Gary Whitta.
Star Wars: Rogue One is slated for a December 16, 2016 release.
