One of my favorite things about being a TV reviewer is trying out pilots, because it’s filled with possibilities. Is this going to be the new breakout show? Is the lead actor going to be my next crush? Will it scare me? Will I laugh out loud?
Pilots also come with lower expectations because sometimes there’s a big backstory to tell, and sometimes it’s just that you haven’t connected with the characters yet. You need a little more time. And if it’s only a half hour (approximately 23 minutes without commercials), well… that’s just the cherry on top of the Mike TeaVee cake.
My verdict on Weird Loners?
Loved it!
Weird Loners 1.1 ‘Weird Pilot” was lighthearted and the foursome is really weird. There’s banter with more than a bit of chemistry mixed in. You are introduced to the four thirty-somethings, at low moments. Caryn (Becki Newton) gets rejected because she moves way too fast. Stosh (Zachary Knighton) got fired from his job and evicted from his place for a very good reason. Zara (Meera Rohit Kumbhani) walked out on her boyfriend and her place. And Eric’s (Nate Torrence) dad died sitting next to him. This “Weird Pilot” is the story of how the four became friends. Make sure to watch all the clips below.
Caryn to Stosh: “You strode in here with your hair and your… pants and you fixed my smoke alarm. Ok? That is a lot to throw at a girl who’s been drinking chablis since lunchtime.”
I did laugh out loud more than a few times and I already have a crush on Zachary Knighton.
Weird Loners airs Tuesdays at 9:30pm on FOX.
FOX’s press release:
WEIRD LONERS
(Tuesdays, 9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT)
In a world full of happy couples, there are those who just can’t seem to figure it out”¦
WEIRD LONERS is a new single-camera comedy about four relationship-challenged mid-30-somethings who are unexpectedly thrust into one another’s lives, forming unlikely bonds in a Queens, NY, townhouse.
Starring Becki Newton (“Ugly Betty”), Zachary Knighton (“Happy Endings”), Nate Torrence (“Hello Ladies”) and newcomer Meera Rohit Kumbhani, the series explores the lives of these underdogs who, each for his/her own distinct reasons, are solo singles when most of their peers are well along the path of marriage and family.
As the members of this off-kilter quartet get to know each other, they’ll face an endless array of riotous – and likely uncomfortable – circumstances, ranging from a reunion with an estranged pre-teen son, to confusion about same-sex dating, to scheming the art world to make a quick buck.
WEIRD LONERS is a show for all those who have at some point felt scared, lost, lonely and overwhelmed in the world of love and relationships. Namely, everyone.
WEIRD LONERS is produced by 20th Century Fox Television. The series is created and written by Michael J. Weithorn (“The King of Queens”). Weithorn, Jake Kasdan (NEW GIRL, “Bad Teacher”) and Melvin Mar (NEW GIRL) serve as executive producers. Kasdan directed the pilot. “Like” WEIRD LONERS on Facebook facebook.com/WeirdLoners.
