Sony has been searching for an actor to play the new Spider-Man ever since they announced that they would be rebooting the character. Previous reports confirmed that the studio wanted to focus on Peter Parker balancing his life as a high school student while being a superhero. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said the ideal range for the character would be around “15-16” and rumored tests with Weeds star Mateus Ward gave us an idea that they wanted an actor who would be able to truly represent that age.
Now in a new report, Sony is said to have settled on at least five actors. They are: Nat Wolff, Asa Butterfield, Tom Holland, Timothée Chalamet, and Liam James.
The Wrap, was the first to break the news.
Nat Wolff is best known for playing Isaac in The Faults in our Stars, and will appear in Paper Towns, another adaptation of a John Green young adult novel. He also starred in the ensemble romantic comedy New Year’s Eve, and alongside Ant-Man star Paul Rudd in Admission.
Asa Butterfield is best known for starring alongside Chloë Grace Moretz in Martin Scorsese’s Hugo. He also appeared in Ender’s Game. He is set to lead Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

Tom Holland is a relative unknown at this point, having appeared opposite Tom Hardy in Locke, and in Oscar-nominated film The Impossible. However, he will star in Ron Howard’s In The Heart of the Sea, which opens later this year.
Timothée Chalamet appeared in both Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar as the young Casey Affleck; and in Jason Reitman’s Men, Women, and Children. He also starred in eight episodes of Homeland and four episodes of Royal Pains.
Liam James has had a huge TV career having appeared in multiple episodes of USA’s Psych and AMC’s The Killing. He also has had a few film roles that include The Way Way Back and 2012.
The Wrap adds that Drew Goddard has yet to be confirmed as writer and director, but is still a very much a strong frontrunner. The report does not mention any other names Sony may be considering as director, putting Goddard that much closer to getting the job.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige will produce the film. The tentatively titled The Spectacular Spider-Man is scheduled to open in theaters on July 28, 2017, although since there is a deal in place to share the character, he is heavily rumored to make his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War.
So what do you think of this shortlist?
