On Outlander last week, Claire and Jaime (Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan) came home to Lallybroch, to welcoming yet acidic arms. His sister Jenny (Laura Donnelly) and her husband Ian (Steven Cree and as close to a brother Jaime will ever have again), have been so worried, but have also been bearing the burden of acting like interim laird. After exchanging unpleasant memories of Captain Randall (Tobias Menzies) wanting sex with them both, they are finally start to feel some semblance of a peaceful life in their home. Until…
Outlander 1.13 “The Watch” review: Of course, Jaime and Claire cannot have peace. We ended last week with a gun to Jaime’s head. Turns out it’s “The Watch,” who is kind of like the Scottish mafia. Jenny and Ian pay them for protection, and that’s all they were doing. The leader, MacQuarrie (Douglas Henshall), is not horrible, but his men are crass, gross, and rude. Quick thinking Jenny says Jaime is a cousin, because most of these “men” would turn him in for the price if they knew. They buy it, but a new man, Horrocks (Lochlann O’Mearáin), whom Jaime has encountered before, knows who he is. He keeps quiet, but only because he’s looking for the bigger payout. Man… he does not know who he is messing with. Although his end is predictable, how it comes about is not.
Jenny is about to give birth and it looks like Claire is it, in terms of midwives. The issue of Claire’s fertility comes up twice. Claire admits to Jaime that she doesn’t think she can bear children. She tried with Frank. When she talks to Jenny about it, she waves it away, disagreeing. Are they going to follow the books with this plot point?
By the way, I know women were a lot tougher in terms of physical labor during that time, but Jenny up and about three days after the birth was a tiny bit hard for me to swallow. That being said, it was kind of admirable. She can be laird if she wanted to. She’s strong enough. I also am really enjoying these women and their burgeoning friendship. I did not like the antagonism when they first met.
Speaking of plot points, we are getting closer to the torture that is in store for our love-that-spans-centuries couple. The beginning of that started with the insistent, “Where’s Jaime?”
