The road to a Wonder Woman movie has been a stilted one. Plagued with all sorts of behind-the-scenes productions problems ranging from having to hire Patty Jenkins to replace Michelle MacLaren to the idea that Warner Bros. and DC have no idea how to craft a cohesive shared DC universe, the studio really could use a confidence booster right now. And they may have found it.
If the reports are indeed true, then we may actually see Chris Pine star opposite Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman, as Steve Trevor the love interest of the titular character. More on the story below.
The Wrap was the first to report on the news. According to them, Pine is in negotiations to play the leading man/love interest in the film.
Steve Trevor is the World War II pilot who crash lands and discovers the secluded Amazon world known as Paradise Island. He is then nursed back to health by the Amazon princess Diana, better known as Wonder Woman, who fell in love with him and followed him when he returned to the outside world.
That sort falls in line with previous reports that the film would be a prequel of sorts, which would place before the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, in the same report, it was said that the Wonder Woman trilogy would first start off in the 1920s with Diana exploring the world of Man, which would then be followed up with a sequel taking place during World War II, with a film set in modern times closing out the trilogy.
There is also a rumor that Scott Eastwood was also in the running for the same role but for Suicide Squad. Sources tell Variety that WB gave him the choice of either testing for that role or be given a guaranteed supporting role in Suicide Squad. He took the latter. As to who Eastwood could be playing, your guess is as good as ours.
Pine is best known for playing Captain Kirk in Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness. Like Common before him, Pine was also rumored to play as Green Lantern.
Apparently, a lot of tests took place the past few weeks, and Pine “won over production execs and Gadot at his meeting.”
It is important to note that these are only negotiations, and nothing is official as of yet. However, once it has reached this point, there is a strong chance Pine will sign on for the role.
Written by Jason Fuchs, Wonder Woman is tentatively scheduled for a June 23, 2017 release. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens March 25, 2016.
