Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton has entered into negotiations for a role in Marvel’s upcoming title Doctor Strange.
Swinton is up for the role of the Ancient One, a Tibetan mystic and mentor to Strange. If the deal works out she would join Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game, Star Trek Into Darkness), who is already locked in to play the title role of Strange. Chiwetel Ejiofor is also said to be up for a role, though there’s no word on where that stands currently.
In the comics, according to the Marvel Universe Wiki, the Ancient One was born over 500 years ago in a small farming village in the land that is now known as Tibet, where a fellow resident of the village who had attained magical knowledge somehow shared the knowledge with them. The two had different plans for their new found magical talents—the Ancient one wanting to use the mystical energy to benefit and protect the village while the other wanted to take over neighboring villages and build an empire—which ultimately led to disaster as all of the villagers except the two were wiped out, leaving the Ancient One alone to age much slower than a normal human and the other fleeing to another dimension.
Eventually the Ancient One, before officially being known as such, found their way to an order of sorcerers whose elder members were known as the Ancient Ones (you see where this is going). After quickly surpassing all of the other sorcerers in the order in skill, and after numerous notable feats, they were eventually named sorcerer supreme of the Earth dimension. All of this leads to the arrival of Doctor Strange one day, desperately seeking help to heal the hands he requires to perform surgery that were badly injured in a traffic collision, who ends up as the Ancient One’s disciple on his way to becoming sorcerer supreme himself.
Swinton won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in the 2007 drama Michael Clayton, and has appeared in a wide variety of other notable roles. Just a few of her other credits include Orlando, Adaptation., the angel Gabriel in Constantine, the White Witch in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and its sequels, We Need to Talk About Kevin, Moonrise Kingdom, Only Lovers Left Alive, Mason in Snowpiercer, and Madame D. in recent Best Picture nominee The Grand Budapest Hotel. She can next be seen in Amy Schumer’s comedy Trainwreck and the Coen brothers’ upcoming Hail, Caesar! next year.
Doctor Strange is being directed by Scott Derrickson, and is currently scheduled for released on November 4, 2016.
