Things have gone pretty well for Stephen Amell lately. His hit CW show Arrow just finished a successful third season, and he was cast as Casey Jones in the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel. But a new role has presented itself… professional wrestler! On the May 25th episode of WWE’s Monday Night Raw, wrestler Stardust, a heel (bad guy) was getting into the faces of several ringside fans. One was Amell, and a twitter war has since broken out between the two.
More on that below.
Rumors began circulating that WWE is interested in having Amell participate in a match with Stardust at their biggest event of the summer – Summerslam at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. Amell is a HUGE wrestling fan, and has been looking to get involved with the WWE for years as a guest host for their flagship Monday night show. Fans of Amell who follow him on Facebook, know his fandom is legit. He constantly flashes WWE replica title belts, awarding them for Fantasy Football Championships.
WWE is no stranger to celebrity involvement. During the same May 25th show, the cast of the upcoming film Entourage, were there to promote their film, and support Long Island local wrestler Zack Ryder. Earlier this year, Daily Show host Jon Stewart was involved in an angle with current WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins.
Stardust, portrayed by Cody Rhodes (son of legendary wrestler Dusty Rhodes), is a character who often claims to be searching for outer-worldly powers. He and his brother Goldust (Dustin Rhodes) spent most of last year searching for the “Cosmic Key” aka the Tag Team Titles.
Amell responded to the rumors of his upcoming in-ring battle by posting to Twitter:
One thing is for sure as fans of Arrow can tell you, Amell is definitely in shape and would NOT look out of place in a WWE ring. That, combined with his unabashed love of pro wrestling, makes me think maybe Stardust is biting off more than he can chew, messing with the Arrow.
Arrow seasons 1 – 2 are streaming on Netflix, and season 3 episodes are available on Amazon Prime for $1.99 each for standard definition or $2.99 for HD. WWE’s Monday Night Raw is on every week at 8:00pm ET on USA. Stay tuned for any updates on the Amell/Stardust feud.
