Recently, Disney had to announce that they weren’t moving forward with Tron 3 (better known by its working title, Tron: Ascension). The studio didn’t give any specific details as to why they decided to pull the plug, but despite numerous reports that the cast and crew were due to report on the Vancouver set this fall, they never actually greenlit the film. So now that Disney halted production on the film, loyal fans of the cult film have stepped up asking the studio to reconsider the decision and start preproduction on the sequel again.
More on this story below.
Per Comicbook.com, fans have launched a petition on Change.org to the save the now cancelled Tron 3 – a final resort fans must turn to when such decisions are made.
The sequel did sound promising. Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde were all set to reprise their roles from the previous film, with the sequel expected to center on the computer algorithm Quorra, adjusting to her new life as a living being outside of the grid. Cillian Murphy was expected to reprise his uncredited role as well. Just before Disney pulled the plug, it was reported that Jared Leto was also approached for a role in the film, but no official offers were made.
Though many of these petitions are created when big studios make such decisions, they almost certainly don’t get the desired result.
Despite Tron: Legacy‘s $400 million worldwide box office, the film wasn’t a commercial success due to its production and marketing costs. Still, the two films have created a huge cult following, and the thought of a sequel being so close to production excited them. But with the recent box office performance of Tomorrowland failing to live to industry expectations, it comes as no surprise that Disney decided to cut their losses and pull the plug on Tron 3.
Still, head over to Change.org if you’d like to sign the petition.
