The success of Tangled, Disney’s take on the classic fairytale Rapunzel, and its animated short Tangled Ever After, will continue with a new animated series that can be seen on the Disney Channel in 2017.
A new report says that Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi will reprise their roles as Rapunzel and Eugene (a.k.a. Flynn Rider). Learn more about the new show below.
According to a report from Variety, the series will take place between the events of the first film and the animated short. The short, which debuted in front of the 3D re-release of Beauty And The Beast in 2012, later debuted on the Disney Channel, drawing in just over 5 million viewers.
The series will follow Rapunzel (Moore), who has been liberated from her tower thanks to Flynn (Levi), as she acquaints herself with her parents, her kingdom, and the people of Corona. In doing this she realizes there is much more she needs to learn before she can truly accept her royal destiny, causing her to put her crown and put her marriage on hold to seek out epic adventures, much to the dismay of her father, the king. Also returning are her sidekick chameleon, Pascal, the no-nonsense horse, Maximus, and the Snuggly Duckling Pub Thugs. The series will also introduce newcomer Cassandra, a tough-as-nails handmaiden, who becomes Rapunzel’s confidant.
Here’s what Gary Marsh, president and CCO of Disney Channels Worldwide had to say about launching the new series on the Disney Channel:
“The genius of the original movie was its seamless blending of cinematic adventure, character-driven comedy and touching emotion. And we are fortunate to have several of the creative talent from that movie on board with this new production. With the addition of Chris and Shane as executive producers, we have the perfect team in place to create a series worthy of the original film.”
Tangled composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater will reunite to work on the series. It will be developed by executive producer Chris Sonnenburg (Enchanted), who will also serve as supervising director, and Shane Prigmore (The Lego Movie), who is co-exec producer and creator director. Jase Ricci (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) is the story editor on the Tangled series, and Kevin Kliesch (Tangled Ever After) will serve as the score composer. Claire Keane (Frozen, Tangled) consulted on development of the series.
