Like most movie remake news, it is unwelcomed. No matter who is attached or who stars in it, fans will speak out against the remake project, especially when it comes to cult films. So when word got out that Dwayne Johnson would be involved in the remake of Big Trouble In Little China, fans were especially displeased. But Johnson has proved himself to be a leading man on the big screen, and that he can also share the spotlight with a star-studded cast. He is even showing fans of the original that he has the best intentions, by asking John Carpenter himself to work on the film.
More on this story below.
Johnson spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming project. During the interview, he talked about fan reaction, and how he has respect for it,
I loved reading the reactions from the fans, that they were so polarized – I’m the same way. My response is: Know that I come to the project with nothing but love and respect for the original, which is why we want to bring on John Carpenter.
The last bit of that statement is a big reveal. Recently, Carpenter talked about the remake saying that he had nothing to do with the project and had no problem with it, considering that he didn’t write it. But Dwayne Johnson later added why he was making such a request:
I loved the original when I was younger and I loved the main character – all the characters. It felt like if we surrounded ourselves with the right group of people, the right writers who loved the movie too and wanted to honor it, bring on John Carpenter in some capacity “¦ If we did that, then we have a shot at hopefully making something good.
As you read, Johnson still doesn’t know how Carpenter would fit into this if he is brought in to work on the film. If he is, it would probably be in an executive producer capacity, although they should be giving him a better position.
When it came to the writing, Dwayne Johnson added:
“And as we write it, if the whole thing starts to stink up, then we thank everybody for their efforts and accept this just couldn’t make it.”
As we have seen before, very few Carpenter remakes ever live up to the original, so it is nice to see that there is some effort being put into the film to be good.
Fox has yet to announce a release date for the Big Trouble In Little China remake.
