Guillermo del Toro was on hand at San Diego Comic-Con 2015, taking part in the Legendary Pictures panel, to show off and discuss his upcoming gothic horror movie Crimson Peak, along with cast members Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston, and Mia Wasikowska.
Del Toro wanted the movie to be scary and gorgeous.
Wasikowska said she has never been on a set like this before, while Hiddleston says that his favorite part of the set was the hallway. He says it was the most extraordinary place, and was sad when they had to tear it down. Del Toro commented that the bathroom was his favorite, but not for reasons you may think. Chastain didn’t want to get into spoilers, but said that Wasikowska’s character Edith’s bedroom was the best.
Hiddleston was given a 10-15 page character biography including star signs, date of birth, and other details that gave him full insight of his character. He joked that he was consistently teased by del Toro, to which the filmmaker chimed in by saying it got to a point where they were like Twins (the Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito movie). Hiddleston then said he was Schwarzenegger.
When explaining her character, Chastain said everything Lady Lucille Sharpe does comes from an act of love. Her secrets would inform certain scenes. A lot of these 15-page character profiles detailed the character’s secrets. Then del Toro revealed that he had asked the cast not to share any of the characters’ secrets with each other in order for the production to be more organic.
Hiddleston said that secrets are a big theme in the film, and a lot of their secrets are formed because of the characters’ past. He then added that these characters are liberated by the past, and that the massive house seen in the film is the embodiment of the past.
Hiddleston says that the last act of the film was the most emotionally grueling part of the film. The last 45 minutes will be headlong, with twist after twist.
Del Toro felt happy that he was free to do the R-rated movie he wanted to do in the English language, and that at no point in time did Legendary or Universal pressure him into making a PG-13 film.
