Wagner Moura as Pablo Escobar in Netflix's Narcos

Netflix has released a trailer for their upcoming crime drama Narcos. The new series follows the rise of drug lord Pablo Escobar and his Medellin cartel, and the drug wars that followed. The entire first season of the show will be released on August 28th.

The show stars Wagner Moura (Elite Squad, Elysium) as Escobar, as well as Boyd Holbrook (Run All Night, Gone Girl), Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones, Graceland), Joanna Christie (Misfits, Doctors), and Maurice Compte (Sabotage, A Walk Among the Tombstones).

The Medellin cartel – the most violent, ruthless and wealthy criminal organization in the history of modern crime. And the one man who lorded over them all… Pablo Escobar.

NARCOS is the true story of the U.S. and Colombian efforts to battle the Medellin cartel during the cocaine-fueled drug wars of the 1980’s. Multi-layered and multi-faceted, NARCOS depicts a brutal world where lines are blurred and little is black and white. The Netflix original series, starring Wagner Moura, Boyd Holbrook, and Pedro Pascal, premieres August 28, 2015.

Narcos is produced by José Padilha, who also directed the pilot episode. He returns to the crime drama genre he’s much more comfortable in with movies such as Elite Squad and its sequel Elite Squad: The Enemy Within, both of which also starred Moura, on his resume. He’s also well-known for his work directing documentaries such as Bus 174. Padilha attempted to jump up to mainstream Hollywood movies with last year’s RoboCop remake, which ultimately failed to perform well both critically and financially at the box office. Rumors were that the director was miserable trying to work with a major studio on the project, and it sounded like it wasn’t something that he was planning to do again. At least not for a while.
