SYTYCD: “Top 18 Perform + Elimination”

SYTYCD 1209-16

Last week Monday, certainly was the week of dance. SYTYCD had the first elimination show for their Top 20, and we were sad to say goodbye to Darion and Lily. So You Think You Can Dance changed things up this season (as they are apt to do). There were 3 dancers from Travis Wall‘s Team Stage, and 3 dancers from Stephen “tWitch” Boss‘s Team Street, in danger of going home. That’s not so different. What was different was that viewers got to tweet to save their favorites (Neptune and Moises) during the show. Two dancers were saved that way, and the judges, Nigel Lythgoe, Paula Abdul, and Jason Derulo saved Derek and Ariana.

Before I continue with the SYTYCD dance love, Spoiler alert! The 2 dancers eliminated are announced at the end of this! And… watch all the highlight videos, and the check out the gorgeous image gallery below.

Last Tuesday, SYTYCD celebrated 10 years of dance by recreating our favorite dances through the years. I love going back and seeing the all-stars and their perfection.

And last Saturday was National Dance Day! Did you get up and dance?

Anyway… here we go.

Choreographer: Stacey Tookey
Dancers: Derek, Jaja, Alexia
Style: Contemporary
Song: “All Waters” by Perfume Genius

Beautiful piece. Jaja (my fave) did very well. Her emotions were there. You could see only slightly that her technique was not as perfect as Alexia, who was breathtaking. Derek was there for the girls for the falls and the lifts – very enjoyable.

Choreographer: JaQuel Knight
Dancers: Megz, Moises, Jim
Style: Hip-Hop
Song: “Whateva” by Remy Ma

Megz killed it! Well what did you expect? But guess what? Ballet dancer Jim was good too! But Moises was really not good at all. He did not keep up with the other two.

Choreographer: Tovaris Wilson
Dancers: Edson, Yorelis, JJ
Style: Jazz
Song: “Restart” by Sam Smith

This jazz number with elements of hip-hop was weird, only because I noticed Edson rather than the 2 beautiful women that were fighting over him. Nobody was technically bad, but I wasn’t feeling this.

Choreographer: Jean Marc Genereaux
Dancers: Asaf, Marisa
Style: Cha-Cha
Song: “+1” by Martin Solveig feat. Sam White

Poor Asaf. He just couldn’t handle this number. She was strong and magnetic. And trying very hard to overcompensate. He looks great though.

Choreographer: Sean Cheesman
Dancers: Gaby, Ariana, Burim
Style: African Jazz
Song: “Gorilla” by Lord KraVen

In rehearsals, it made it seem as if Burim would really suck. And maybe that was intentional, lowering our expectations, but he wasn’t bad at all. The costumes were weird in a good way. The girls were strong and lifting each other. I enjoyed the quirkiness of this routine.

Paula loves Burim’s “package.” That won’t be in a video clip, but it was funny.

Choreographer: Justin Giles
Dancers: Kate, Neptune
Style: Contemporary
Song: “Promise” by Ben Howard

Kate was flawless, and both their emotions are genuine and made us feel. Neptune was very good. I think his arms and legs could have extended a bit more, but you would think he was trained in contemporary.

Choreographer: Pharside & Phoenix
Dancers: Hailee, Virgil
Style: Hip-Hop
Song: “Runnin'” by Noahplause

So awesome! This was the best of the night. And Hailee!! Not a hip-hop dancer, and murdered this dance. Virgil is always a star. One of my favorite dances of the season.

Choreographer: Jaci Royal
Dancers: Team Stage
Style: Contemporary
Song: “For My Love” by Hayden Cainin

Quite lovely. Their connection was rippling.

Choreographer: Marty Kudelka
Dancers: Team Street
Style: Hip-Hop
Song: “Break Ya Neck” by Busta Rhymes

So fun! Jaja was in the front controlling the movements of the others by spotlight, which was a nice touch.

I must say I’m really enjoying the format and pace of the season thus far.

So… results?

The judges saved Edson and Asaf.

Twitter saved…

Sadly, Moises (expected) and Burim (unexpected) were let go.

SYTYCD | What Moves You: Moises | FOX

Dance is Moises’ savior! When he dances, he dances big! Moises likes the aspect of communicating with your body while not having to say a word.

SYTYCD | What Moves You: Burim “B1″ Jusufi | FOX

Every time Burim dances he puts his character into his dance. He is always striving to do better than before. Dance is who he is!
