Tatiana Maslany

It seems that Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) is just itching to get into the Star Wars universe. She was one of the frontrunners for the lead role in A Star Wars Story: Rogue One, a role that ultimately went to Felicity Jones. But now she is back on another Star Wars list, this time for Star Wars: Episode VIII.

She won’t be alone though, and she will be up against some pretty stiff competition. According to a new report, Gina Rodriguez (Jane The Virgin) and Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel) are also in consideration for the female lead role in director Rian Johnson‘s untitled Episode VIII. More on the story below.

According to The Wrap, we shouldn’t consider this current list the definitive one as Johnson is still very early in the casting process, with auditions still being held, and several rising stars yet to read for him. However, other sources say that the list has been narrowed down to the aforementioned Rodriguez, Maslany, and Cooke. The three, along with a group of other girls, will do a chemistry test with The Force Awakens lead John Boyega before the end of the month. So what does that mean for Daisy Ridley‘s Rey character? That is very unclear. The film’s last teaser shows Rey offering Finn help to get up, plus the two of them were seen running away together from an incoming Tie Fighter. There are rumors saying that Rey is Finn’s love interest, but that has yet to be confirmed.

As expected a representative from Disney declined to comment on the matter. We don’t know much about the role itself, but the report is says that based on Internet speculation it could be that of Han Solo’s daughter. Again, that is just pure speculation.

Rodriguez is best known for her work on Jane The Virgin, for which she won a Golden Globe. But since the actress plays the title character of the hit show, it’s not clear how the CW series will be affected if she wins the role. Regardless, she is an amazing talent, so it should be interesting to see how far she can go or even if she gets the role. Her next project sees her star opposite Mark Wahlberg and Dylan O’Brien in Peter Berg’s action drama Deepwater Horizon.

Cooke is probably the least known actress on the list, with having starred in Bates Motel, and a handful of smaller films like Ouija, The Signal, and Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. Her next projects include Katie Says Goodbye, and The Limehouse Golem. However, the report adds that she is also in consideration for a role in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Ready Player One.

Finally, Maslany is the most likely of the three to get the role for a couple of reasons. One, as aforementioned she has already tested for a role in a Star Wars film, and although she didn’t get it, she must have made an impression because her testing for a role in Star Wars: Episode VIII says a lot. The actress is best known for her work on Orphan Black.
