We left Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) in pure bliss; undisturbed happiness with the love of his life Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards) and it appeared that “O-licity” could actually have a chance. But… this is television and it’s time for a new season. So Oliver and Felicity will put bliss on hold to fight the evils of Star City; renamed after the apparent death of Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh).
Watch the new trailer below.
Of course this comes at the worst possible time (right as Oliver puts a ring in a dessert). After a season of dealing with the evil in himself, forced into the servitude of Ra’s al Ghul (Matt Nable), Oliver was able to turn the tide of Ra’s and seemed to leave the green hood behind. In his wake was left the crime fighting team of Diggle (David Ramsey), White Canary (Katie Cassidy), and his sister, Thea (Willa Holland).
Well, there’s a new big bad in the city, hinted at the end of last season, and they need the Arrow to suit up and join the fight. Neal McDonough (Band of Brothers, Captain America) is Damien Darhk, and he is quite different from other villains on Arrow. He can stop an arrow shot right at him… one foot in front of him by raising his hands. Most of Arrow‘s bad guys are fighters, warriors, ninjas, etc. Darhk appears to be something much more like the meta-human villains on The CW’s other DC superhero show, The Flash. Since both shows intertwine and crossover, one can only assume Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) isn’t too far off.
Will Oliver embrace the darkness again to stop Darhk and his group hell-bent on anarchy? Darhk certainly seems like a classic uber villain, ready to take direct aim at all whom the Green Arrow holds dear. I love Neal McDonough. I remember him as the slightly crazy Pvt. Reich in the grossly underrated period horror film Ravenous (1999), and being a cool, cocky bad guy opposite Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in Walking Tall (2004). He has a unique look to him, and the right attitude to portray an awesome and detestable bad guy.
The return of DC’s TV universe is one of my most highly anticipated events of the Fall season. Arrow‘s 4th season premieres Wednesday night October 7th at 8:00pm. The Flash debuts the night before, also at 8. Characters from both shows will join forces on DC’s Legend’s of Tomorrow debuting in early 2016.
