Honest Trailer Aladdin

Screen Junkies are hitting Disney hard on Honest Trailers – three straight weeks now! First it was 1953’s animated Peter Pan, then Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, and now their 1992 classic Aladdin to prep for its 25th anniversary Diamond Edition Blu-Ray/DVD release on 10/13. Aw man, I’m already thinking about how much I miss Robin Williams.

Watch the Honest Trailer below.

Narrator Jon Bailey immediately reflects on his main point of the Pan HT with Disney’s brutal treatments of other culture’s stories, and shows that Aladdin… kinda shows some truth of the Arab world, albeit in a way that seems like Sharia Law look FUN!!! And seriously, I can’t imagine an updated version where the King screams “Praise Allah!” and that’s no disrespect to any Muslim readers. This review got awkwardly political and fast… QUICK LOOK A GENIE!!!

Watch as hunky poor boy with a heart-of-gold Aladdin and strong-minded parachute pants wearing Jasmine, fall in love in the most realistic way possible… as he lies about literally everything from his royal lineage, to his massive wealth, to his own name. They face the evilest evil villain in Villaintown, Jaffar, who is so evil, he has an evil snake staff. And his awesomely annoying talking parrot, Iago, who is Gilbert Gottfried’s second most famous bird (cough) AFLAC.

Of course we get to the main character, the irreplaceable Robin Williams’ Genie who steals every moment he’s on screen, with impressions that no kid my age got until much later in life, like Rodney Dangerfield, Jack Nicholson, and Peter Lorre. Bailey even jokes about how much trouble the Genie must’ve been for the animators. But this is Golden Age Disney, so the songs are the stars and if you’ve seen the Frozen Honest Trailer, we get entire mock ups of the amazing Menken/Rice/Ashman soundtrack including; The Telling Kids It’s Okay to Steal song, The Take Your Kid to the Bathroom Song (“time to pee, take it from me, release your agua”), and of course “A Whole New World” without the subtleties we didn’t understand as kids, and all about Aladdin and Jasmine “porking” in midair. Starring… that uncomfortable feeling when you realize Disney’s sexiest princess was actually 15(!) and Aladdin was 18 making their relationship… totally fine in that part of the world… I guess. New Title: A Genie.

While not their best effort, this HT did accomplish two things; make me have to buy the Blu-ray for my daughter, and really miss the heck out of Robin Williams. Screen Junkies currently has over 4.7 million subscribers on YouTube and they release a new Honest Trailers video every Tuesday.
