iZombie returned last week for its 2nd season, and Liv’s (Rose McIver) life is a mess. Her mom and brother aren’t speaking to her, because she would not donate blood for a transfusion. Her roommate flew the coop after finding out her secret. Major (Robert Buckley) doesn’t want anything to do with her, after she infected him then cured him. Ravi (Rahul Kohli) is trying to recreate the cure. And Clive (Malcolm Goodwin)? She and Clive are good. Bringing down Max Rager and its smarmy CEO (Steven Weber) is still the prevalent overarching theme (along with making a cure). But iZombie is still about a case a week, or rather, eating the case’s brains so Liv can fake visions, while she really takes on memories and the personality of the deceased to solve the crime with Detective Clive. Major is blackmailed into killing a zombie by Max Rager CEO Vaughn Du Clarke (Steven Weber), and goes all Dexter doing it (except with remorse, of course).

Spoilers below.

iZombie 2.1 “Zombie Bro” review: Liv goes total frat-boy for this episode. A douch-y fraternity guy gets stabbed at a costune party, so all of a sudden, Liv is belching, beer-ponging, and “brah”-ing. Her new roommate, Max Rager spy Gilda (Leanne Lapp), has no idea what is going on with her. Not a very good spy, are you?

Blaine’s daddy makes an appearance! The hugely talented Robert Knepper (who also starred on Heroes with David Anders) is the DA.

Ravi and Major have the cutest bro-mance ever. And as bro-mances tend to do, they get into trouble together. Ravi wants to take Utopium as a science experiment, but needs Major to watch him. Cue awesome shirtless Ravi dancing on a stage with women at a club. Major, is still majorly (get it?) f***d up from being forced to kill that zombie, especially now that the guy’s kids are all cute and sad and on TV. So… sensibly, he takes Utopium too. He passes out and Liv rescues him, thinking that they are closer now. I mean, he does murmur lovely sentiments, but I am not sure if it’s because of the past, or if it’s because of the threats Vaughn Du Clarke made about her as blackmail. Of course, later, when sober, he shuts her out again, and looks like he is at the start of a lovely little addiction. Poor Major! He has the darkest path on the show, and he’s not even a zombie (anymore).

They do solve the case, which turns out to be even sadder in its irony. Watch!

First I must say that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this show! It is an hour of fun, that rivals even The Flash sometimes, in a completely different way. It’s already on its way to being a classic. That being said, I must say a few things:

– I need Clive to be brought into the fold. He’s a lot smarter that they give him credit for. At least say that the visions make her take on the personality of the victim. I know that is unbelievable, but it’s more believable that him just randomly believing she’s a frat boy, a racist, and the countless other things she’s been.

– I really hope Gilda turns out to be a good girl. I think they will set her up this way, because she’s in a position that will naturally lend itself to empathy.

– More Blaine (I’m greedy).

– Can they give Major one moment of happiness?

  1. This episode was like the absolute perfect mix of darkness and humor…it was definitely the funniest episode of the scene with some great one liners – “I hope you like the Jagerbombs and homoerotic subtext” lol. The frat boy jokes/puns were great, but the relationship and interactions of of Liv and Major really stole the show as usual.

At first I was laughing at the scene where Major and Ravi hit up the club and do opium, but then they did a great job of really paralleling a real drug come down as it went from being on top of the world at the club so quickly to Major laying in bed, in full PZTSD state getting blitzed on opium while Liv knocks on the door. What a jarring sobering up effect!
