Last week on Scream Queens Zayday (Keke Palmer) was kidnapped by the Red Devil and we were given a peek at who might be the baby born in a bloody tub during the Kappa party 20 years earlier. Zayday had intentions on running for Kappa president much to chagrin of Chanel (Emma Roberts). In response, Chanel and her Chanels have planned the biggest Halloween gala ever, a pumpkin patch to fight the dreaded Black Hairy Tongue disease (yep), which we feature both a Shining-style lawn maze and the Chanels dressed as the wives of assassinated presidents. Before any of this can take place though, Dean Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis) holds court at Kappa House to unveil some terrible news; she’s closing the beaches… sorry, campus, I meant campus. The scene riffs on Jaws with the great Chad Radwell (Glen Powell) doing his best Quint impression. Ok, maybe Quint plus John Belushi’s Bluto.

“As our great 60th President John Kennedy Jr. said, “˜the only thing we have to fear is fear itself'”

Spoilers below.

While Chanel is strategizing her way around Munsch’s Halloween curfew, the other Chanels are dealing with their own issues, especially Chanel #5 (Abigail Breslin), who is getting a little sick of the abuse. Hester, now Chanel #6 (Lea Michele) is happy that her new appearance is drawing rave reviews from Chad Radwell and she’s apparently two-timing Chanel, and Chanel #3 (Billie Lourd) is just really friggin’ weird. Then it’s full scale revolution as Chanel gets arrested for murdering Miss Bean.

Grace and Pete (Skyler Samuels, Diego Boneta) want to find Zayday, but none of the other Kappas shows any interest in helping, particularly Chanel #3 who has assumed command what with Chanel in jail and #2 dead. They interrupt her dad Wes (Oliver Hudson) and Gigi (Nasim Pedrad), to help them. When they go to Munsch, she calls in Denise (Niecy Nash) who is convinced Zayday is actually the killer. I mean after all, she did have a chainsaw in her room.

Turns out Hester; uh, Chanel #6, was actually two timing Chanel #5 and all allegiance is back with Chanel. Fitting with her future perfume called Revenge, Chanel sends #5 to set up the pumpkin patch despite curfew being in effect. Meanwhile Wes, Gigi, Denise, Pete, and Grace all work to figure out how to find Zayday and Gigi’s plan gets way too specific. Gigi is hiding something (she might be the bathtub baby) and Grace doesn’t trust her because “she’s obviously mentally disturbed.” In the pumpkin patch, Red Devil appears with a huge set of gardening shears, and goes after Chanel and her brother lovers. This leads to a hilarious chase through The Shining maze with Red Devil even pulling an Exorcist III homage.

The Zayday search party tracks her iPhone to a house with a big creepy Silence of the Lambs basement. Coincidentally, we then get a full on SOTL scene where Gigi tazered the Red Devil while engulfed in darkness. When everyone else arrived, the Devil is gone and with no Zayday, Denise is convinced Zayday is the killer. Except a few seconds later, Zayday is back at Kappa, escaped and ready for the sorority president vote.

The final reveal shows that in fact Gigi is totally in cahoots with the Red Devil, and the brains behind all the killings. Poor Wes, just when he thought he found someone. He’ll always have Dean Munsch as a fall back.

This episode was one huge horror homage, with at least 4 horror films that it borrowed from. The plot is coming together with the full disclosure of one of the villains, and next week’s episode promises to whittle away at the remaining bodies. This wasn’t the strongest episode, but the show is still fun and a breeze to sit through. I love how gratuitous everything feels. Most importantly though, we need more Chad Radwell. Screen Queens returns next Tuesday night at 9:00 ET on FOX.
