“I just love a man who gives you head – and lets you keep it!”
Directed by Gilbert Adler, 1996’s Tales from the Crypt Presents: Bordello of Blood stars Dennis Miller (Saturday Night Live) as Rafe Guttman, a wisecracking detective who is called upon to investigate some strange happenings at a bordello on the edge of town.
After her delinquent brother Caleb (Corey Feldman) goes missing, Catherine Verdoux (Erika Eleniak) enlists the services of a private eye. After a night of heavy drinking and debauchery, Caleb and a friend visit an underground brothel in the guise of a funeral home, never to be seen again.
Turns out the whorehouse is owned and operated by Madam Lilith (Angie Everhart), a redheaded vampire whose lustful servants are ready and willing to suck patrons dry! Armed with a Super Soaker filled with holy water and a battle ax, Guttman and televangelist Reverend Jimmy Current (Chris Sarandon of Fright Night) must fight their way out of Lilith’s den of sin and save the captive Catherine.
Presented in the style of the Tales from the Crypt HBO series, Bordello of Blood opens and closes with the Crypt Keeper (voiced by John Kassir) and his buddy, the Mummy (William Sadler). They engage in a contest of rock, paper, scissors and when the Mummy wins, he slices off the Crypt keeper’s hand with a meat clever. You know, because obviously that’s what you do when you’re a mummy and you’re hanging out down the crypt with a pun-peddling ghoul.
Anyway, Bordello of Blood isn’t as strong as its predecessor, Ernest Dickerson’s Demon Knight. Sure, it’s overflowing with boobs and blood, but Adler’s film falls flat on nearly every other level. It’s a chintzy production with bad jokes and underwhelming performances. It’s sort of like a porn parody version of Robert Rodriguez’s From Dusk ‘Til Dawn, complete with lusty vampire queens, holy men, and homemade anti-vampire weapons.
Tales from the Crypt Presents: Bordello of Blood sleeps its way to Blu-ray thanks to Scream Factory, Shout Factory’s sub-division of forgotten horror and science-fiction films. As with most Scream Factory releases, this Collector’s Edition looks great, with solid grain and sharp, vivid colors. With a 1080p transfer in 1.85:1 and a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0, as well as a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix for home theater enthusiasts, this is the best Adler’s film has ever looked and sounded.
This Blu-ray release of Bordello of Blood is a worthy addition to Scream Factory’s catalog of creepy cult classics. The film, along with its predecessor, Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, is now available at Amazon. Look below for a list of bonus features, trailer, and cover art!
