Last week on Once Upon A Time, fixing powder is sprinkled everywhere (I need some) – on Guinevere, so she will be loyal Stepford wife to Arthur (Liam Garrigan), on Camelot, and on Snow and Charming (Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas), so they will help Arthur take the Dark One’s knife. Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) thinks it’s cute that Henry (Jared Gilmore) has a crush in Camelot. Emma (Jennifer Morrison) is worried though. Back in Storybrooke, Emma has stolen Merida’s (Amy Manson) heart, and tasked her with making Mr. Gold (Robert Carlyle) brave, so he can remove Excaliber from the stone.

Spoilers below.

Once Upon A Time 5.5 “Dreamcatcher” review: We finally get to see how Merlin became a tree – through a dreamcatcher. Emma has a shackful. It showed her that her parents were under Arthur’s spell, and showed her exactly how The Dark One trapped Merlin – with the tear of lost love. Regina volunteers to relive the moment her mother killed Daniel to get the tears. And the tears did come, but were too healed to work.

Henry and Violet grow closer. There is a party, but she doesn’t feel like going. Her horse is missing. Henry wants to get it back for her so he turns to his dark mother. Poor Henry. In Camelot, she only liked him as a friend. He does not remember, so he will have to bear the disappointment twice. Or will he? They are on his turf now, and he may be able to show her a different side.

Merida is trying her damnedest to get Mr. Gold to fight, but he can’t. He is only brave when he is dark.

And the worst mother of the year award goes to… Emma. She manipulated the whole thing to get Henry’s tear, in the name of the greater good. The worst part is that Regina and Robin watched it all through the dreamcatcher, and so did Henry. They DID free Merlin back in Camelot though. Merlin, who is young and handsome? He was just about to free Emma from the darkness, when…

Nothing. I have to wait for next week too.

This week’s episode moved us closer to the truth (I think), but was not my favorite for a couple of reasons. I really don’t like when Rumple is a sniveling coward. I’ve always hated those episodes. I honestly hope he becomes The Dark One again, so he’s more interesting. Also, there was very little Colin O’Donoghue. I have been very vocal about how happy I was he would get more airtime this year, but this episode felt like last season in that respect.

There is also no explanation about where Merlin is now.

“Only You” by Yes IS a good date song.

Once Upon A Time airs Sunday nights at 8pm ET on ABC.
