DVD Review: ‘The Bat’ Starring Vincent Price

The Bat
Restored Edition DVD
Directed by Crane Wilbur
Starring Vincent Price, Agnes Moorehead, Lenita Lane, Darla Hood
Film Chest
Release date: November 12, 2013
In The Bat, the 1959 murder mystery from director Crane Wilbur, Vincent Price might have made top billing, but the iconic horror actor takes a back seat to Agnes Moorehead, who headlines here years before her famous turn as Endora on TV’s Bewitched (which is how my generation grew up knowing her). Moorehead stars as Cornelia Van Gorder, a popular murder-mystery novelist who rents a mansion called The Oaks, where she experiences terror and intrigue more intense than any of the stories that she’s written.
Cornelia arrives to The Oaks for the summer with a team of servants, but when word quickly spreads of a killer on the loose, dubbed “The Bat,” the frightened staff flees town, leaving behind just the writer and her longtime maid and confidant Lizzie Allen (Lenita Lane) at the mansion. Soon after, the masked killer, donning gloves with steel-clawed fingertips, breaks into the mansion and releases a bat, which bites Lizzie. Fearing rabies, the ladies phone a local doctor, Dr. Malcolm Wells (Vincent Price), who then becomes involved in trying to catch the killer.

Over the past two weeks, we’ve delved deeper in the mindsets of the our main characters. First Dash (Stark Sands) fell in love with a murder suspect and had to talk her down; last week Lara Vega (Meagan Good) came face to face with her dad’s killer and barely kept things under control. This week we get a peek into the mysterious island where the pre-cog siblings grew up after pre-crime was ended. Agatha (Laura Regan) still lives on Fiddler’s Neck Island, away from the chaos of city life. Arthur (Nick Zano) meanwhile has been an uneasy accomplice to Dash and Vega in helping prevent murders. When Agatha gets a vision of her old flame’s daughter dying, she calls in reinforcement”¦ which is bit strange being as she’s been trying to convince her brothers that Vega is working against them.
“You think Agatha is shaken up now… just wait” Arthur warns Dash about Vega’s involvement.

‘Fallout 4’ Big Leagues Perk Preview (Video)

Now that the seven Fallout 4 S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes videos have come and gone (Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck if you missed them), and with just two short weeks until the game is finally released (!!!) there’s not much else to do but count down the days with pure unrestrained excitement.
But to help make these final couple of weeks waiting a little more bearable, it appears that Bethesda will be showing off some of the various perks you can get in the game. The first they’re covering is the Big Leagues perk, which increases the damage that you can do with melee weapons. And, given that the game is set in the Boston area, this short preview is baseball and Red Sox friendly.
You can check out the video below.
