It sounds like something you’d expect to see as a fake news story on April Fools’ Day, but it’s something that’s actually happening. James Franco is playing Tommy Wiseau in a movie about the making of The Room, a cult classic widely considered to be the worst movie ever made that was written, directed, produced, and starred Wiseau in the lead role.
Franco, who’s also directing, has shared an image from the set of the movie, titled The Disaster Artist, with him in full Wiseau costume and accompanied by his brother Dave Franco, who plays the actor who played Mark (oh hai), Greg Sestero. A bunch of actors have also recently joined the cast, including Josh Hutcherson and Kate Upton. You can see the image and read more about the cast and who they’re playing below.
Along with Hutcherson and Upton, Ari Graynor, Jacki Weaver, Zac Efron, Hannibal Burress, and Andrew Santino also joined the cast recently. Seth Rogen also stars.
Hutcherson will play Philip Haldiman, the actor who played the immensely awkward Denny. Graynor will play Juliette Danielle, who played the master of emotion tearing Lisa. Weaver is set to play Carolyn Minnott, the actress that played Lisa’s mother Claudette. As for the other actors, Burress plays the owner of the stage Wiseau rents to film The Room; Santino plays the actor who played Mike; Efron will have a cameo role as a drug dealer. It’s unclear at the moment who Rogen and Upton will be playing.
The screenplay for The Disaster Artist is penned by The Spectacular Now and The Fault in Our Stars writers Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber.
The movie is based on the book The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, the Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made, which is written by Sestero and Tom Bissell.
Here’s the image of James Franco as Wiseau and Dave Franco as Sestero from James’ Instagram account. The image above is of the two they’re playing for comparison.
