The World According to Wonder Woman
Insight Legends Series
Hardcover
By Matthew K. Manning
Illustrations by Paul Bulman
Insight Editions
Release date: December 15, 2015

She is the Queen of the Amazons, the God of War, and she can hold her own next to Superman and Batman. She is one of the most iconic comic book characters, as well as the world’s most famous female superhero — she’s Wonder Woman!

But, as we learn in The World According to Wonder Woman, after all is said and done, she’s still simply Diana.

In this 64-page hardcover from Insight Editions’ Insight Legends series, author Matthew K. Manning crafts the famous Amazonian’s story through her own perspective, with short autobiographical chapters that seek to reveal the person behind the demigod.

Along with her history, Diana tells us how she learned to fly, find likeminded people, and keep a secret identity, as well as when and how to fight, the preparations for war, and putting up with family. She also writes about her view of the United States after becoming an emissary to the world outside of Themyyscira, the secret tropical island paradise where she hails from.

There’s a lot of details about the life of Wonder Woman — the offspring of the god Zeus’ from his extramarital affair with Queen Hippolyta — but the Justice Leaguer also spills some Amazon secrets.

Paul Bulman‘s color illustrations do Wonder Woman justice and are in the style we’re used to seeing her in in the DC Comic books, making them a wonderful accompaniment to this in-depth look at the character. While powerful and brave, Wonder Woman is also stunningly beautiful, and the artwork here allows that beauty to come through while maintaining her strong stature.

Wonder Woman’s surprising simplicity is paralleled in the writing, but this is far from a happy-go-lucky memoir about hanging out with Superman and kicking bad-guy butt, although there’s some of that, too. There’s several areas where Diana expresses her dismay with her mother’s habitual lying, along with her disappointment with some of the history of her people.

Being an ambassador of peace as well as a fierce warrior makes Wonder Woman a complex character, and The World According to Wonder Woman hits on all the parts that make up the superhero, and does so in Diana’s unique voice, which makes this book an easy, yet informative read.

Included in the book are a few pull-outs, such as a small poster of the cover art and a map of Themyscria — which could really come in handy, since the island is hidden from the rest of the world! — and a gatefold features a pantheon of gods.

The World According to Wonder Woman makes a nice edition to any comic book library, and would be something fun and cool to give to kids, especially young girls, who would be wise to look up to a character as great and empowering as Wonder Woman.

From Insight Editions:

As the demigod daughter of Zeus and Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons, Wonder Woman has been trained from birth as a Themysciran representative for the human world. In this exciting new addition to the Insight Legends series, Diana shares her unique perspective on the world, as both a fearless warrior and an ambassador of peace. Filled with insight on everything from growing up on Themyscira to being a member of the Justice League and becoming the God of War, The World According to Wonder Woman divulges all the information aspiring superheroes need to step into her boots. Also including special removable items such as a map of Themyscira, newspaper clippings reporting on Wonder Woman’s exploits, Steve Trevor’s incident reports, and a page from a Themysciran book illustrating the legend of Diana’s birth, this fascinating look into Wonder Woman’s life will delight fans of the Amazon princess.
