‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ May Return To Theaters In Black and White In 2016

Mad Max: Fury Road Header

Mad Max: Fury Road came charging into theaters with heart-stopping chrome action, guns blazing, and a beautiful rocking soundtrack. Since its release, the film has been earning huge praise from fans and critics alike, it leads the Critics Choice Awards with 13 nominations, and has been nominated for two Golden Globes.

While Fury Road has been released on home entertainment platforms, those itching to see it in a theatrical format may get their chance, as there are talks of getting the film back into theaters, but with one very exciting catch. According to director George Miller, there is a chance that the film could be seen in black and white. Check out what Miller had to say below.

Speaking to Screen Daily, Miller talked about “the best version of this movie is black and white.” Unfortunately he added how that format is only geared towards art movies. However, the limited colors of orange, teal, and metal chrome was a nice touch, and as close to limited colors as we would get. Here’s what Miller told the site:

“We spent a lot of time in DI (digital intermediate), and we had a very fine colorist, Eric Whipp. One thing I’ve noticed is that the default position for everyone is to de-saturate post-apocalyptic movies. There’s only two ways to go, make them black and white “” the best version of this movie is black and white, but people reserve that for art movies now. The other version is to really go all-out on the color. The usual teal and orange thing? That’s all the colors we had to work with. The desert’s orange and the sky is teal, and we either could de-saturate it, or crank it up, to differentiate the movie. Plus, it can get really tiring watching this dull, de-saturated color, unless you go all the way out and make it black and white.”

It’s a bit interesting to hear that Miller originally intended the film to be a black and white release, and not color. There were plans to release a black and white version for a home entertainment release, but for unknown reasons WB Studios held back on that. The metallic chrome playing against the orange and teal played really well in Fury Road, and after seeing a couple of images from the black and white version, I’m interested in seeing how that version of the film will be received by the general audience and fans alike.

The studio did re-release Fury Road back in September for a short one-week engagement, which has some of us believing that they could do it again for the black and white version that everyone is waiting to see. Seeing that the film has already garnered so many nominations and has been recognized by its peers, if a black and white release were to happen, it only makes sense to see it in the best format possible, a theatrical one.
